Vein Surgery

Ivy Vein Surgery was founded by Drs. Navin Singh and Marwan Khalifeh to provide skilled diagnosis and treatment of venous disease such as spider veins and varicose veins. Our mission is to assist our clients in living healthier lives with less discomfort due to venous disease.

VENOUS DISEASES

At Ivy Vein Surgery, we specialize in the treatment of spider veins and varicose veins.

 SPIDER VEINS

Spider veins are red, blue, or purple tiny veins that radiate out from a central point just under the skin. Spider veins can develop on any part of the body, including legs, face, and ankles and cause increased pressure on the veins. Abnormal blood flow to an affected vein can cause this condition and any activity or condition that puts pressure on leg veins such as weight gain, sitting or standing for long periods of time, or even pregnancy can contribute to their development. Other factors can be injury, overexposure to the sun, medications that affect hormones, and a family history of spider veins.

VARICOSE VEINS

Veins that are dilated, twisting, bulging, or discolored can be varicose veins. No symptoms may be related with varicose veins or they may cause a dull, heavy ache, itching, burning, fatigue, and cramping. Dilated veins may be tender and the ankles can swell as a result. Varicose veins complicate blood flow and can be aggravated during pregnancy or standing for long periods of time. Varicose veins can weaken the valves that control blood flow, allowing blood to flow backward and to pool, which results in high pressure buildup creating twisting and stretching, slow blood flow, and potential blood clot formation.

WHAT TO EXPECT

When you call Ivy Vein Surgery to set your first visit, our helpful staff will be glad to answer all your questions, but we hope the following will help you to know what to expect.

APPOINTMENTS

Generally, you should be able to set an appointment within 5-7 days of your initial call. We ask that you arrive 15-20 minutes early for your appointment in order to fill out the necessary paperwork for your visit.

THE EXAM

When you come for our office you will receive a thorough evaluation from one of our physicians that may include:

  • Doppler exam (ultrasound)
  • Clinical exam review
  • Circulation assessment
  • Laser test spot for laser procedure, if applicable
  • Development of your personal treatment plan

TREATMENT

After diagnosis, treatments that might be recommended may include laser or schlerotherapy. If you are suitable for immediate treatment, we may be able to treat you during the exam. If you cannot receive immediate treatment, an appointment will be made after the treatment plan is described and clearly explained to you.

RECOVERY

Recovery after treatment can vary depending on the amount of treatment, but expect a few black and blue marks, and bruising and crusting that will resolve in 7-10 days. You should be able to walk out of the facility and drive yourself home.

FOLLOW UP

Follow up visits occur 2 weeks after the initial treatment. After two weeks, you will notice healing and visible improvement in the appearance of your varicose or spider veins.

PROCEDURES

Based on your diagnosis, one or more of the following treatment procedures may be recommended: Laser spider vein treatment, Schlerotherapy, Ambulatory phlebectomy and Endovenous ablation.

LASER SPIDER VEIN TREATMENT

Using a laser provides us more control to selectively target and destroy spider veins. No anesthesia is required and pain is minimal. Laser treatment involves removing the superficial blood vessels carefully using brief, intense emissions of light. Treatment session times vary from 15 minutes to 1 hour depending on the size of area to be treated and may require several sessions.

SCHLEROTHERAPY

Schlerotherapy is used for larger venous malformations. Affected veins are injected with a solution using a very fine needle which may cause a slight pinch with each insertion. Ultrasound enables accurate guidance for each injection. Cotton balls and compression tape are applied to each area after the injections are completed. Schlerotherapy encourages blood to clot, and the vessel to divert blood flow to healthy veins, thus improving circulation. This treatment can take 15 minutes to 1 hour.

AMBULATORY PHLEBECTOMY

In some cases, laser treatment and schlerotherapy may be not be an effective treatment. Ambulatory phlebectomy is a method of removing diseased veins through very small incisions or punctures. These incisions are typically so small that stitches are not required and usually any scars are nearly imperceptible. This procedure can take 1-2 hours.

ENDOVENOUS ABLATION

Endovenous ablation using a safe laser or radio frequency and is performed under local anesthesia. A thin catheter is used to deliver heat energy in order to close the diseased vein. Healthy veins take over the task of returning blood to the heart while the diseased vein shrinks after treatment and are unlikely to reopen. A very tiny incision of several millimeters is required for catheter placement, resulting in virtually no visible scar.
